The exact cause of redness is still unknown, but it appears to run in families. The disorder is more commonly seen in people with fair complexions. Several factors appear to contribute to the dilation of blood vessels in the skin, and worsen redness including: alcohol, spicy foods, coffee, strenuous exercise, extreme temperatures, chronic stress, sunlight and certain drugs, such as corticosteroids and some blood pressure medications.
